How to Print Wash Care Labels the Right Way

Wash care labels — the little tags with fabric content and laundry symbols — have to stay soft and survive dozens of washes. Here’s how they’re actually made (and what tools not to use).

The Right Tool: Thermal Transfer

Durable care labels are printed with a thermal transfer label printer using resin ribbon on satin or nylon care-label ribbon. The result is soft, rub-proof, and survives 50+ wash cycles — the industry standard for compliant care labels.

What Doesn’t Work Well

  • UV DTF: bonds only to hard surfaces — won’t stick to fabric labels.
  • Direct UV: cures rigid; too stiff for a soft label worn against skin.
  • Inkjet/laser paper: not wash-durable.

The DTF Option: Tagless Care Labels

Instead of a sewn tag, many brands print the care info tagless — directly inside the neck with DTF. It’s soft, permanent, and you can gang dozens per sheet. See our tagless neck labels guide.

Quick Answer

Sewn satin care tags → thermal transfer + resin ribbon. Printed-in-the-neck care info → DTF. See all tag & label types →
